MY EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

Ask a child what they like about school and he or she will say things like this: my friends; supportive adults; whole school days like sports day; parties; play time; good facilities such as a swimming pool or theatre; trips away from school. These are all things which should, can and are provided by families and communities. What the children are really saying is that they like active, outdoor, community play. They are not saying that they like school; in fact they are saying that they like non-school things best. I believe we need to listen to the children.

My educational writing archived below is based on challenging the assumptions universally made in educational debate. Here are six assumptions I believe to be false:

  1. schools are good for education
  2. schools are necessary - the only choice is what type of school
  3. poor people are poor because of a low quality education
  4. exam results are the measure of a good school
  5. the goal of education is a well-trained workforce
  6. a successful student is one who gets a good job and is successful within the system

On close inspection, none of these assumptions are universally true. I consider them all to be false or partially false. Schools are not the ideal environment for educating childen - families and communities are superior nurturing environments. Schools are not necessary - they are a modern conception in their current form and children thrive out of schools and always have. The objective of a good education does not need to be a well-paid job - there are other more important goals such as freedom, happiness and the pursuit of meaningful knowledge. I believe the current consensus on education needs to be challenged and this is what I am attempting with my writing and YouTube channel.

Read the chapter to the kids, find the words in the text, match word with picture, practice the spellings, then have the kids read it to you!
